Wellness Culture: The Importance of Wellbeing at Work

After years of hearing about the importance of wellbeing at work, it’s good to remember that it’s not just a trendy buzzword.

According to a CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development) survey in 2022, almost 1 in 5 companies in the UK don’t do anything to improve staff wellbeing. Recognising the importance of health and wellbeing at work can significantly impact your business’s success. Furthermore, it affects your long-term sustainability.

In this article, we’ll explore why fostering a wellness culture at work is vital. We will also provide practical tips for employers and business owners to promote health and wellbeing in the workplace.

Why is Health and Wellbeing at Work Crucial?

Before delving into the “how,” let’s understand the “why” behind the importance of wellbeing at work. A business that places a strong emphasis on employee health and wellbeing reaps a multitude of benefits, including:

  • Enhanced Productivity: Healthy and happy employees tend to be more engaged and productive. When individuals have their needs met, they perform better, which leads to higher productivity and efficiency. [1]
  • Reduced Staff Sickness: A focus on health and wellbeing at work can help reduce staff sickness from illness or burnout. When employees are physically and mentally well, they are less likely to take sick days! [2]
  • Improved Talent Retention: A workplace that prioritises employee wellbeing is more attractive to top talent. Employees are more likely to stay with an organisation that values their health and provides a supportive work environment. Again, it’s about meeting their needs.
  • Enhanced Creativity and Innovation: A healthy and balanced workforce is more likely to come up with creative solutions and innovative ideas. It’s just a known fact that a well-rested mind is more capable of tackling various challenges. [3]
  • Positive Team Culture: A wellness culture fosters a positive workplace environment where employees feel heard and seen. This, in turn, can boost morale and teamwork across activities.

Promoting the Importance of Wellbeing at Work

Now that we’ve established why health and wellbeing at work matter, let’s explore how you can actively promote a wellness culture within your organisation. Depending on where you’re at with wellness culture, it might take a little or a lot of effort to develop and improve your business.

You can use some, or all, of the tips below, to start promoting the importance of health and wellbeing at work.

Educate Your Team on Wellness Culture

You should start by educating your employees about the importance of wellbeing at work. Conduct workshops, and webinars, or provide resources on topics like stress management, nutrition, and mental health.

The NHS released a full guide that focuses on looking after your team’s health and wellbeing, and how to adopt a wellness culture in your workplace. The guide is packed with useful information, like:

  • Identifying wellbeing goals
  • Creating a safe working environment, and
  • Quick wins to promote wellness

Consider Offering Flexible Work Arrangements

Since the pandemic, and surprisingly sometime before, flexible working has grown massively. Offering flexible work schedules like remote work options or convenient hours helps employees balance their work and personal lives.

Examples of ‘flexible’ work arrangements can include:

  • Compressed Hours (full-time over fewer days)
  • Flexitime (must work ‘core’ hours, flexibility over the rest)
  • Working from home
  • Job sharing (two people for one job, split hours)

Sometimes it’s not possible to offer flexible working arrangements due to financial restraints or a necessity for staff to be onsite at all times. Whatever your situation, maybe a flexible working pattern would work perfectly at your company – give it a go!

Encourage Physical Activity

Create incentives for physical activity, such as gym memberships or wellness challenges. Some employers sign up for employee-enrichment schemes, which give employees rewards based on their efforts. Additionally, encourage employees to take breaks for short walks or stretching exercises, especially if their job involves being sat down for long periods of time.

Sitting at work is no walk in the park (obviously), a study from 2017 found that sitting for long periods of time (like at an office desk) was linked with fatigue throughout the working day, musculoskeletal problems, and hypertension. [4]

Top Tip: A good rule-of-thumb to remember is to take a 5-10 minute break for every 1 hour you spend sitting down.

Showing Appreciation Through Recognition

As an employer, there’s one simple, yet powerful, way to make a big difference at work: showing your staff that you appreciate their work. Taking the time to acknowledge their contributions goes a long way in boosting their spirits and maintaining morale.

When you create an environment where recognition is a regular occurrence, you’re not just enhancing mental health and wellbeing. You are also nurturing a positive workplace culture that leads to happier, more committed employees.

Promoting Inclusivity and Diversity for Wellbeing

In our quest to emphasise the importance of wellbeing at work, we must also recognise the pivotal role of inclusivity and diversity. A workplace that values and celebrates diversity fosters a sense of purpose among employees. This is integral to overall wellbeing. Make a conscious effort to create an inclusive environment where individuals from all backgrounds, genders, ages, and abilities feel respected and valued.

Encourage diverse perspectives and experiences, as this can lead to richer collaboration and problem-solving. Additionally, inclusivity and diversity are not just about compliance; they are about creating a workplace where everyone can thrive and contribute to a better working environment.

Understanding the importance of wellbeing at work and actively promoting a wellness culture can lead to a happier, healthier, and more productive workforce. By investing in the physical health and emotional health of your employees, you not only enhance their quality of life. You also contribute to the long-term success of your organisation.
